The exterior of your home is an opportunity to create an aesthetic that puts your personality and style on display. For a look as dynamic as you are, consider using more than one exterior cladding or siding material in your design.

Mixing siding styles and exterior materials gives you the opportunity to experiment with different textures and a wide variety of color palettes to help your home be the envy of the neighborhood.

Before you jump into your design, it’s important to carefully select your materials to make sure they are of similar quality. For example, brick holds up well over time, so you’ll want to pair it with another enduring material, such as fiber cement siding, instead of a cheaper alternative, like vinyl siding. This will help ensure you get long-lasting protection for your home, and a more cohesive, unified design.

Now that you have your materials in mind, here are several siding combination ideas to help you get started on your stand-out home.

BRICK AND SIDING COMBINATIONS

Brick can add vintage appeal to even the most modern homes. It adds three-dimensional texture that can be applied to an entire wall or used as an accent.

For example, you may consider bricking the base of a Colonial-style home and using Hardie® Shingle siding through the rest of the elevation. Alternatively, you could opt for a board-and-batten look above the brick, with shingle siding in the gables.

Combining brick with fiber cement siding gives you a much wider range of color palettes than just using brick alone. You can use siding to achieve striking contrasts, or to bring out different colors in your brick.

When it comes to popular color combinations, red brick with a warm neutral, like Cobble Stone, is a classic look, as is pairing it with a bolder blue, like Deep Ocean. Brown brick can look exceptional with a light blue, such as Boothbay Blue, or a darker color, like Iron Gray.

STONE AND SIDING COMBINATIONS

Stone can add rich texture to modern and traditional homes, and can be used much in the same way as brick to create appealing accents or distinctive main features.

One of the most common ways to use stone is around the base of a house, either up to the bottom of the window or just past it. Then, you can finish the wall with vertical siding panels or lap siding. If your home has columns, stone can be used around these as well.

You have a wide range of color options to create a distinguished aesthetic with your siding and stone exterior. A monochromatic color scheme is a simple, yet elegant, option, either with matching colors or slightly different shades of the same color. For example, using brown stone with similar shade, such as Timber Bark.

You can also create subtle contrast between your materials by using analogous colors, which are adjacent on the color wheel. For example, if you’re using blue-toned gray stone, a natural shade of green, like Mountain Sage, would make for a complementary combination without appearing over the top.

CREATE YOUR PERFECT SIDING COMBINATION WITH BRICK OR STONE

Mixing siding styles and colors opens a whole new world of design options for your brick or stone home. One of the best pieces of advice to keep in mind when experimenting with your design is to use moderation to prevent your home from looking too busy.

Aim for striking accents in an otherwise simple aesthetic or subtle variations in texture throughout. The result will be stunning house with tons of curb appeal that will have your neighbors buzzing.
