Chip and Joanna Gaines reveal a stunning exterior makeover using siding from the Magnolia Home | James Hardie Collection. See which colors they chose with the big reveal!
This is our final installment in a three-part series — and it's been such a fun journey! Together with James Hardie, Chip and Joanna Gaines have taken us through the house re-side process. From checking the exterior to choosing new siding from the Magnolia Home | James Hardie Collection, we've been along for the ride. Today we're joining them for the big reveal, and we finally get to see the finished product.
Chip and Joanna Gaines are the dynamic duo behind the hit TV show "Fixer Upper" and the founders of Magnolia. Known for their warm personalities and impeccable style, they've made a name for themselves in home design and renovation. Chip handles the construction and renovations, while Joanna brings her eye for design. Together, they create beautiful spaces that feel functional and stylish. They’ve inspired countless homeowners to rethink their spaces, and the Magnolia Home | James Hardie Collection brings their signature style to exterior home projects as well.
The story so far...
Getting to this point has been an exciting journey. If you're only joining us now, we’ll catch you up, but you might want to go back and see how this all started. First, Chip showed us the house and helped us spot the signs that it was time to replace the wood siding.
The young homeowners had put quite a bit of work into their 1950s home already, tearing out layers of old shag carpet and restoring the original wood floors, updating the bathroom, and turning their backyard into a place to gather with friends and family. The exterior siding needed a refresh, to match the style of the homeowners as well as give the home a deserved boost in curb appeal — so it was time to re-side with a durable new exterior.
Located in Texas, the home also faces extreme heat in the summer and freezing rain in the winter, and wood siding wasn’t going to cut it against the extreme weather. Engineered to perform beautifully in whatever climate you live in, Hardie® fiber cement siding and trim resists shrinking, swelling, and cracking, even after years of wet or freezing conditions.
Chip explained that fiber cement is also a much lower-maintenance product than wood. While wood typically needs care every five years, Hardie® fiber cement requires less maintenance and does a much better job of standing up to the elements. Plus, it imitates the look of wood so convincingly that you're getting the dual value of a more durable exterior and one that looks as beautiful as classic wood.
Once Chip had assessed the house and decided on a re-side, it was over to Joanna for her expert design guidance. Joanna took us through the process of how she puts colors and finishes together; the collection is inspired by nature, where she discovers colors and textures that work well together. She showed us different Hardie® siding and trim options and explained more about the Magnolia Home | James Hardie collection, and how she chose the colors to easily mix and match together, so homeowners could feel confident their choices would create the perfect look.
The big reveal
Joanna has personally hand-picked all the product and color combinations for the Magnolia Home | James Hardie Collection — and it shows. All elements work together to add value and take this home's exterior to another level. She approached this collection like any other — intending to give homeowners the confidence and tools to choose what they really love for their homes. That way, it's their style, aided by Joanna’s keen design judgement.
For this project, she worked with the homeowners to choose a beautiful combination to transform the curb appeal of this home. The base of the exterior is Hardie® Plank lap siding, Smooth Texture in Chiseled Green. To that, they've added Hardie® Trim boards in Weathered Cliffs. The fiber cement trim elevates the look of the house, adding depth and layers to emphasize its best parts. To finish it off, they chose Hardie® Shingle siding for the gable, which adds a beautiful character to the house.
As Joanna mentioned when she was choosing colors, they've used Hardie® products "right from the beginning," so a collaboration with James Hardie has always felt authentic for them. Joanna always has her clients and their needs for their home in mind, and selecting products she trusts to maintain their beauty and durability was a natural choice. Hardie® siding looks beautiful for years to come, and its low maintenance which means this young family can focus more on their newborn and less on their home exterior.
You don't get a second chance to make a first impression
Updating the exterior of your house is a great way to add value. It sets the tone for the style and quality of your home. A fresh outdoor look tells buyers something about your home and the people who live there. It's your first impression, offering a hint of what people can expect from the rest of the house.
When you're making such a big decision, it helps to have a palette that's already been curated for you. As Chip says, "Color is always the hard part. You know, I think that's where a lot of people get stuck." Thankfully for them, that's the part Joanna most enjoys.
You want your home to be a reflection of who you are and what you love. Handpicked with Joanna’s attention to detail and style, the Magnolia Home | James Hardie Collection helps you choose combinations and colors you can be confident are going to look high-end, polished and put together. You save time without sacrificing quality or your personal style.
